Project
Swissmetro stops would be located directly under the main central stations or in their immediate vicinity, with an access via a connecting tunnel.
Our transport network has reached the limits of its capacity. Every day, thousands of people are stuck in traffic jams and the train tracks are used to capacity. Over the next 20 years, the Swiss National Railways (SBB/CFF/FFS) expect the volume of traffic on the most affected sections to double.
With the rail-wheel-technology only small improvements are left to be made, even with substantial investments. And because of today's heavy usage of the transport network, the maintenance and servicing costs are skyrocketing.
Swissmetro solves these problems in an elegant fashion. The project consists of an underground magnetic levitation train that will link together the main Swiss cities. It frees railway traffic capacities exactly where they are needed most.
Swissmetro stations will be built directly beneath or very close to the main central train stations, where passengers can easily transfer to the existing transport network.
In peak hours, a Swissmetro runs every 6 minutes with speeds up to 500km/h to take you to your destination. Thus the trip from Zurich to Bern will take 12 minutes, and from Geneva to St.Gallen 1 hour.
Thanks to the use of the newest technologies, the impact on the environment is minimal: Swissmetro creates no noise, does not affect the landscape, and because of the reduced aerodynamic drag in the decompressed tunnel, consumes only little energy.
