First, Swissmetro will connect Swiss cities and airports quickly and efficiently. In a further phase, extensions of the lines are planned into neighboring European countries, for example to Lyon and Munich.

In the Swissmetro main study several network options were considered. The base line network of the main study located two main axes, namely a north-south route from Basel to Bellinzona and a west-east route from Geneva to St. Gallen with a hub in Lucerne. In a second variant, Zurich is the line network hub. In a later expansion phase connections to Sion and Chur are foreseen.

A Swissmetro on the north-south route to Ticino is no longer a priority. This connection is already served by the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA). The east-west line with Lucerne or Zurich as main hub and the line Basel - Zurich connecting the two airports receive priority.
